How it all started
Kicking dust for the very first time
In 1907, inventor Murray Sprangler worked nights as a janitor who suffered an asthma problem. Using his mind which was built for innovation, he made it his mission to find a solution to the dust that aggravated his asthma as he swept throughout the night.
And so, a tin soap box, a fan, sateen pillowcase and a broom handle led to the birth of the very first HOOVER® contraption. Sprangler quickly realized that this “suction sweeper” as he called it, had enormous sales potential and so he set out to seek financial backing.
W.H. “Boss” HOOVER® was the owner of a leather goods manufacturing shop who bought the patent from Sprangler in 1908. He retained Sprangler as a partner and soon had six employees assembling six units a day in a corner of the leather goods shop.
Passion, creativity, and innovation took flight which marked the start of the trusted household icon which is known today as one of the most trusted brands in South Africa: HOOVER®.
